A lighthouse in the Neely community.
NeelyNeely, MS
First called Washington, Neely was settled as early as the 1840's. The name of the community was changed in 1907 for the first postmaster, Charley J. Neely.
Main Street in Neely is Old Highway 24, which at one time years ago ran from Hattiesburg, MS through Neely and on through Leakesville, MS.
Neely currently has a population of around 486, according to the 2000 census. Neely is located near the center of Greene County and the county seat, Leakesville only a few miles away. Currently only a rural community. The town itself declined in population as the saw mills there closed around the 1920's. In the community there was a large school building, including a teacher's home. Some years ago it was closed and the building became a sewing factory that work a good number of people in the area for some years. A few years ago it closed down then the building was finally destroyed. ![]() Neely today has a US Post Office and the M & M Quick Stop that seems to be a local gathering place. Also there is Neely Volunteer Fire Dept, A Community Center for those party occasions. Also have Neely Utilities providing water services.
